From Graduates of Our Programs:

"I love being drug-free!!!"

Why does my father keep relapsing?

Your father needs treatment for his addiction.   If he repeatedly goes back to using alcohol or other drugs, he is not sufficiently prepared to be on his own without using.

This does not mean that your father wants to use or that he won't be able to eventually keep off the substance.  But a relapse is more than just another disappointment.  A relapse can be a very dangerous thing.

Often, with alcohol, for example, when the addict has been trying to abstain and  turns up drunk after a "lost weekend", the amount of alcohol consumed was dangerously high.  There seems to be a springboard effect that makes the user go overboard with the drinking or drug use and stay wasted for days.  This is damaging, if not fatal.
